Your photos
Photos you open are processed inside your web browser, on your own device. They are not uploaded to us or to anyone else. Finished pictures are saved only where you download them.
Optional "HD cut-out"
Only if you click HD cut-out and agree, the photo you are editing is sent over an encrypted connection to our own HD server, which runs on cloud graphics cards rented from Modal Labs (USA). There a stronger AI makes the cut-out mask, which is sent back to your browser. The photo is held only in memory while it is processed and is deleted straight away: it is not saved, not used to train AI and not shared. We only count that an HD cut-out was made. If you never click HD cut-out, nothing is uploaded.
AI Studio, Unblur and AI backgrounds
The AI Studio (pictures from text, photo to art), the Unblur photo enhancer (also the "AI unblur" button in the editor), the Colourise tool and the "AI…" background option send your description – and, for photo-to-art, unblur and colourise, the photo you chose – over an encrypted connection to our own picture server, which runs on cloud graphics cards rented from Modal Labs (USA). The picture is made in memory and sent back; nothing is saved, nothing is used to train AI and nothing is shared. To apply the daily limit of free pictures we keep, for one day, a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address together with a count – not the address itself and not the pictures. Descriptions that are not allowed (for example adult or violent content) are refused.
Uploads (your recent results)
Pictures you download are also kept in your own browser (IndexedDB), so you can find them again on the "Uploads" page. They stay on your device; we never receive them. You can delete them there, or by clearing this website's data in your browser. At most the last 30 are kept.
API and plugins
The API (api.erasebackground.app) and the Chrome and WordPress plugins work differently from the website: they send the picture to our server, which removes the background in memory and sends it back. Pictures are not stored. See the API terms.
The AI model
The first time you use the tool, your browser downloads the AI model files from our download server (erasebackground-ai.pages.dev, run by Cloudflare) or from this website, and keeps them in its own storage so later visits start faster. Only the files are downloaded; nothing about your photos is sent. You can remove it at any time by clearing this website's data in your browser settings. The only thing the browser remembers besides that is your choice between "Best quality" and "Fast".
Advertising
The website is free because it shows ads from Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to show ads and to measure them, based on your visits to this and other websites. Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for their consent first (Google's consent message); you can change your choice at any time with the "Privacy and cookie settings" link that Google shows. You can turn off personalised ads at Google Ad Settings. More information: How Google uses information from sites that use its services. Ads never see your photos.
We also advertise the website on Google. To learn which ads bring people who actually use the tool, the pages load the Google tag (Google Ads conversion measurement). When you came from one of our Google ads and download a result, Google records that a download happened – nothing about the photo. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland this only happens after you agree in Google's consent message.
Visitor statistics
To see how many people use the website, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics. It counts page views and shows, for example, the country, browser, device type and the page that linked to us. It does not use cookies, does not store your IP address and does not follow you across other websites, so no individual visitor can be identified. Your photos are never part of it. To know how often the tool is used, the website also counts when a background is removed, when an HD cut-out is made and when a picture is downloaded – only that it happened, with no information about the photo. What we do not do
- No account or sign-in.
- No upload of photos (except when you choose HD cut-out, photo to art or an AI background, see above).
- We do not sell personal data.
Web hosting
Like every website, the server that delivers these pages may record technical access logs (such as IP address, time and the page requested) for security and operation. These logs do not contain your photos.
Children
The website is a general tool and is not directed at children under 13.
